Tripura’s first kidney transplant procedure successful

The first Kidney transplant procedure in Tripura was performed successfully at the GBP hospital of Agartala.

Agartala, Tripura, July 9 (HBTV): The first Kidney transplant procedure in Tripura was performed successfully at the GBP hospital of Agartala. Medical teams from Shija hospital in Manipur and GBP hospital of Agartala were involved in the five hours long complex surgery, said the medical superintendent of GBP hospital, Shankar Chakraborty.         

Chakraborty interacted with media persons at a press briefing that was conducted shortly after the operation.           

Chakraborty said the two hospitals inked a memorandum of understanding earlier. According to the memorandum, Shija hospital would mentor GBP hospital’s doctors for a period of five years. A mother donated her kidney to her ailing son. The operation was free of cost. The state government bore the entire expenses, which included flight fares, accommodation, and a token honorarium for the team of 12 doctors that came from Manipur-based Shija Hospital and Research Center.               

Apart from that, approximately INR 88 lakh were spent for installation of the equipment required for kidney transplantation.      

After Assam and Manipur, Tripura is the third state in North East India that has successfully conducted such a medical operation.
